popularly known for people searching for 'Shangri-La’. Recently, however Nepal
has seen the Royal Tragedy, the Maoist insurgency, the declaration of the
State of Emergency, and the dissolution of the house of parliament with a call
for a mid-term elections set for November of this year. The upcoming general
elections may prove to be a watershed event. Join us in this rare opportunity
to hear from Nepal's Ambassador to the United States.
Ambassador Jai Pratap Rana has been serving as the ambassador of Nepal to the United States since January 2002. Mr. Rana has been in Foreign Service for 31 years. During that period, he has served as Nepal's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations and as Nepal's ambassador to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Peru and Venezuela (1985-1999). During his career at the UN, he also held positions as the vice president of the General Assembly(1988) and chairman of the Political Committee of UNGA on International Security and Disarmament (1990). He holds a master's degree in political science and has studied international affairs at the University of London and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
